Sophia Uckmann is a multidisciplinary artist working in the field of visual art, performance and dance. Her practice is centered around the body as a physical entity, as well as a collective idea. Rubber, flax, cotton, hair and wood are part of her sculptural approach, which allows aspects of nature to enter the dialogue with the body. Her work explores the connection between the exploitation of nature and the exploitation of minorities, rooted in the underlying belief in continuous growth. It directly engages with concepts of care, solidarity and resistance, which she researches in collaboration with dancers and performers.
She received an M.A. in arts from Folkwang University of the Arts, as well as an B.A. in fine arts from the Bauhaus University Weimar and is currently living and working in Berlin. Her work has been recognized through several awards and grants, like the Folkwang Award, Bauhaus Women’s Grant and is part of the collection of the German Historical Museum Berlin. She received funding from the Ministry of Culture in NRW, the City of Vienna, and the BBK Berlin. Her work is exhibited internationally, in solo and group-exhibitions.
